Applying a systematic conservation planning tool and ecological risk index for spatial prioritization and optimization of protected area networks in Iran

One of the key purposes conservation selection strategies is to design a network sites support relevant biodiversity components and, therefore, decrease risk populations becoming isolated. To this end, it important be aware habitat locations target species and threats human activities, in order identify areas high priority. This paper takes Chaharmahal Bakhtiari province (Iran) as case study, highlight optimization for six concern, including Persian leopard, Panthera pardus Pocock, wild sheep, Ovis orientalis Gmelin goat, Capra aegagrus Erxleben. run optimization, we first generated following input data: modelled suitable habitats, using InVEST model (Integrated Valuation Environmental Services Tradeoffs) simulated ecological impact road networks (Spatial Road Disturbance Index (SPROADI), Kernel Density Estimation (KDE) Landscape Ecological Risk (ERI)). A visual inspection data revealed that large percentage study area constitutes species, however, disturbances caused by demonstrate central north-eastern regions are significantly affected. Indeed, approximately 10% 25% medium categories, respectively. Optimization Marxan, shows north-western southern should given priority, necessary an efficient network. Habitats located north-central region act stepping-stone or corridors between isolated north-east well-connected north-west south. Overall, findings present show current protected not contradictory suggested but has deficiencies terms size stepping-stones.
